Only my two pences real experience, point'N'click backup strategy:

1) I have a 50 megs partition in ext3 on my 250gb external drive where I put
my "home" backups, the stuff vital to the system.

2) The remaining 200 are shared over the network, usefull for easy access for
colleagues/family, in vFat. @ 4Gb a file, I can even keep DVD images from
work.

3) I use konserve to do backups, in several stances, once a day, to the vFat
partition. Every month or so, I manually delete the previous month content
but for the last one.

4) result is: day-to-day backup up to 30 days, snapshot of the previous months
still available just in case, in compressed format.

...That's because I can't understand "cron" & other backup strategies...

Notes:
- I used recently a konserve-created backup file to try to migrate to
openSUSE10.2, un-tar to a tmp folder then used the import feature in kmail:
Either because of vFat, or because of compression, some import of messages
displays an error message "cannot import file xxxxxxxxxxxxxx". Not much of
them though, can't spot the missing ones over 2GB of mails.

- In the course of a real backup need on the SuSE93 workstation, I did lost
somewhere near 0.5 to 1% of my emails using this technique: it may be
killing, but I was happy enough to recover almost all of it.

- To overcome the glitch between the last backup & the incoming mails since
then, I use "keep messages on server" pop3 feature: it does create
duplicates, but you can get rid of them using the "remove duplicates"
function. Non-advanced-Pop3 servers mostly support "leave message on server",
altough with some bugs (mails deleted after download) sometimes. If you need
it, and know that your mailserver is not supporting the advanced feature,
avoid using the extra options like "destroy if older than...", "destroy if
greater than..." and the like: I tested it, it makes things worse.

A last word of Good Luck: one week after this recovery & migration try-out, my
maXtor OneTouch II died, aged 9 months. That's when I set-up a gmail account
where ALL gets forwarded. A backup Strategy ? Sure, get rid of your files
somewhere it's safe!

:)

Jean-Philippe.
