Actually, I like the current colour scheme. It's just the _large areas_ of 
blue and the amount of text that clutter it up somehow.  Would it be a 
problem to only use those at the sides of the page? Some more white space 
would already make it easier on the eye / brain. 

Just an example: kde-look.org contains lots more text on the main page, but it 
doesn't look too crowded. As far as I can see, it's thanks to this:
- only using two-colored boxes at the sides that also are not very wide
- giving the main content in the center it's own box so it still stands out 
compared to the boxes on the side
- smaller fonts
- having lots of empty space around text areas, relative to the font size
- putting news and new apps in two-colored boxes at the top on one side with 
less detail

Sorry, I just see some kind of orange-red or light-brown color, not light 
yellow. What am I doing wrong?
