Hi Jan,

do I understand you right, that you want to do an icon theme? That means, you 
want to offer alternative icons for the KDE desktop? 
If not - you cannot replace icons in only one KDE app, either it's all or 
none.

An icon theme with smilies would be an interesting thing. I wouldn't use it, 
but other people might like it. For ideas and to see how an icon theme looks 
like, you can check  http://themes.kde.org . There you'll find other icon 
themes like the famous "iKons".
The KDE icons are all made with gimp, you can get the original gimp files by 
checking out the module "art-devel" from CVS.

BTW, your original mail probably went to tackat, who's quite busy with 
Linuxtag preperations ;-) Personally I think, I am not of big help, since my 
phantasy for graphical things is not so good either.
