KDEDIR is initially set when you compile the the kde apps. If you have a
KDEDIR variable present then configure will set that as the install
directory unless it is overwritten with the prefix switch. Since AFAIK this
value is also then used to set the runtime paths in compiled libraries, I'm
not sure that changing it after compile wont introduce some inefficiency.
You should have a kde.sh script or equiv in /etc/profile (profile.d ?)or
equiv (as well as a qt.sh script) which sets KDEDIR, modifies the path etc.

But you dont change it from /opt/kde to /opt/kde2 just coz you want to....
you set it to where your kde2.x is actually installed. If your KDEDIR is set
to opt/kde but kde is installed in /opt/kde2 then of course you will want to
modify it. It can actually be set and exported from almost anywhere.
