You both are using nvidia, then? Maybe that's the issue. I've got a Matrox
G450, 16 meg of RAM, and I'm running X at 1024x768, 24/32 bit color
depth. In my experience, although I've run at slightly larger x/y
resolutions, I haven't tried running at 1600x1200 yet, but that really
shouldn't contribute a whole lot to the size of the X process.

My system has been up for a bit longer:

100 0 26243 26242 9 0 52740 21120 fasync S ? 117:13 /usr/bin/X1

  9:22pm up 22 days, 21:59, 6 users, load average: 4.06, 3.79, 3.41

setiathome, genomeathome, dnetc ruhning plus Gnome / compiling kdelibs.

I haven't seen bigger memory footprints for X in KDe either. (Recently I've
been running gnome waiting for bleeding edge kde to stabilize.)
