Paul,
I do not use Mandrake, so ***my answer could be completely wrong***, but I
think you may need to:
1 uninstall KDE 1.1,
2 install or reinstall all the Mandrake things that Mandrake QT 2.2.1 and
KDE 2.0 RPMs need,
3 reinstall QT 2.2.1 RPMs,
4 reinstall KDE 2.0 RPMs and finally:
5 install KDE 1.1 RPMs compatibility library.
***Just a guess***. I would check with a few other people before starting
all this re-installation, but it may be worthwhile having a good look
around RPMFIND to see if you can understand the dependencies.

What follows is the Mandrake part of a posting I made recently. You can use
the links to html files below to chase dependencies. Just chase the links
looking for Mandrake RPMs which you don't have or which are newer than
those you do have.
Best regards

Most of the URLs below refer to RPMFIND. There may be more up-to-date RPMs
available elsewhere.

*** QT ***
An example from QT 2.2.1: libqt.so.2

Mandrake 7.2:
http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/mandrake//Mandrake/7.2/i586/Mandrake/RPMS//qt2-2.2.1-3mdk.i586.html
Package name qt2; Installs libqt as:
/usr/lib/libqt.so.2
/usr/lib/libqt.so.2.2.1
/usr/lib/libqt2.so.2.2
/usr/lib/qt2/lib/libqt.so.2
/usr/lib/qt2/lib/libqt.so.2.2
/usr/lib/qt2/lib/libqt.so.2.2.1

*** KDE ***
An example from KDE 2.0: libkdecore.so.3:
http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/libkdecore.so.3.html

Here: Mandrake and Red Hat use the same package name for KDE 1.1.2 and KDE
2.0 libs and install both into /usr/lib; Mandrake compensates for using
/usr/lib by installing a KDE1 compatibility library into
/usr/lib/kde1-compat/lib;

Mandrake 7.2:
http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/mandrake/Mandrake/7.2/i586/Mandrake/RPMS/kdelibs-2.0-5mdk.i586.html
Package name kdelibs; Installs libkdecore as:
/usr/lib/libkdecore.la
/usr/lib/libkdecore.so
/usr/lib/libkdecore.so.3
/usr/lib/libkdecore.so.3.0.0

Compare Mandrake 7.2 compatability library install including
libkdecore.so.2:
http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/mandrake/Mandrake/7.2/i586/Mandrake/RPMS/kde1-compat-1.1.2-7mdk.i586.html
Package name kde1-compat; Installs libkdecore as:
/usr/lib/kde1-compat/lib/libkdecore.so.2
/usr/lib/kde1-compat/lib/libkdecore.so.2.0.0

Compare Mandrake 7.1 installation of KDE 1.1.2 including libkdecore.so.2:
http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/mandrake/7.1/Mandrake/RPMS/kdelibs-1.1.2-18mdk.i586.html
Package name kdelibs; Installs libkdecore as:
/usr/lib/libkdecore.la
/usr/lib/libkdecore.so.2
/usr/lib/libkdecore.so.2.0.0

Hi, sorry for my question if you have answered it yet but I didnt' find
the history of this mailing list (did it exist?).

I'm a newbie on Linux platform (and french, sorry for my poor english). I
wanted to upgrade MDK 7.1 with KDE2. Then I have downloaded the mdk's rpm
and read carefully the FAQ. Then I upgraded the 7.2 mdk rpm: menu,
Mandrake_desk, OpenSSL, qt2 and pam.

Well.... The installation was a nightmare :-) A lot of bad dependancies...
I forced it (without uninstall KDE1.1 :-(

Now I have a bad situation:
Part of KDE2 but the kdebase2.0 is impossible to install (even
uninstalling kdebase1.1). I have the message: "File
/usr/share/apps/kdm/pics/users: cpio: unlink failed mauvais descripteur de
fichiers."

(i use rpm -U --nodeps .... )

Grrrrrrr .....

Can you help me please ?

I'm in a bad situation, for example, kpackage doesn't work now, I lost my
personal desk ....

Thank you for the newbie :-)

Bye

Paul
