I think that Jim has once again summed it up well. The point of this
study is find problems in usability in KDE. This has nothing to do with
bugs.kde.org - that is a different project with a different role and
purpose. This won't be a usability bugs database in the same way that is
a bugs database.
The idea here is about creating reports based upon solid testing. This
requires maintainers who can look after the proceedings. Luckily for us,
we are getting a solid team of mainters together such as Jim, Helen,
Pandu, Lee etc, and I am sure many mroe will join in. We also have a
number of others who send in comments and feedback...an area where JP
has done very well.
If you have any criticism of the study then fair enough, but the way I
see it it is better to have a go and fail then not even try at all, and
I think failure is not likely.
Like any open source project, it is about us pulling together and
joining hands and doing our best. I hope you can help us as well [ade].

Quite true. But since this is a new list and a new project we are
trying to
establish a method of doing this. I can't wait till we get the
usability
testing in full swing and reports comming in quite often. I don't want
this
to be an extension of bugs.kde.org, but their format is pretty good for
keeping track of what is going on and status of stuff. We will need
this so
we can maintain what is in the database. Not only the maintainers, but
everyone can submit a report about a certain app. This can be their
friend(new linux user) observations about a certain app. Since I'm the
Kicker maintainer, I don't want to have to do all the reports. I want
more
than one point of view. I do plan on working with a few friends of mine
to
get some feedback from them. My proposed database is just IMHO a good
way of
keeping track of this. It will also tell us if and when the usability
issues
have been addressed. We will also be able to comment in there if the
proposed changes in usability make for a coding nightmare. I was just
trying
to design a flexable robust database that we could use to achieve what
we
want. Please note that my suggestions are only that, my suggestions.
They
are always on a take it or leave it basis. I won't be offended if
everyone
thinks that my suggestions are off track. I have been wrong once or
twice in
my life. :) Since KDE2.2 is to be released on 8/13, most of the
usability
reports that are written now will need to be re-evaluated after then. I
hope
that more people get involved to not only submit suggestions to this
mailing
list, but to get friends and family to evaluate certain applications and
either submit usability reports or send them here so we can discuss
them.
