Essentially ther basis of the study is to find defects in usability for
KDE as a whole. Like any open source project, we can all contribute to
different areas such as kicker usability, koffice usability etc.

The basis of this mailing list is to discuss the building of a framework
for getting usability data and analysing it. At the moment most data
seems to be reports people have written, but online data gathering
systems will be built in due course.

Subject: Let's Make a Decision

Dear KDE-Usability,
It seems to me like we, the mailing list and/or the KDE Usability
project leaders, have to make a decision: are we going to conduct a
usability study on KDE and use that study to make recommendations or are
we going to discuss and try to recommend changes on individual UI
elements that we (KDE developers and /or advanced users) find are in
need of change. Conducting a usability study is essentially saying "we
are going to use carefully collected user/real life data to make our
recommendations" and the having our our discussions on this list say "we
are going to use our own design sense, UI-related reasoning, and
experience interacting with and programming computers to make our
recommendations." I don't think we can try do both, or at least I don't
think we can do it very well. If we decide to take the latter course of
action then perhaps we should clarify to the public and on the web site
that we are not performing a usability study but are more like a UI or
Usability Improvement team or something along those lines. I think
either course of action is fine, but that we have to choose only one.

Just an idea. Thanks.

Best,

--JP
