I haven't used OSX myself, but iirc you have the apps in the Dock, and
asides from that you have to access them via the filesystem. No menu
at all.
(Pre-OSX which I have used, is basically the same except without the
Dock. I just put aliases (mac jargon for links/shortcuts) to
everything on the desktop, as I suspect most others did too.)
