Actually, people *are* familiar with logarithmic sliders.  The slide volume 
controls on most audio equipment are logarithmic (they are linear in dB, but 
that is logarithmic so they are actually logarithmic).

And, yes, I also suggest the LOG scale as a fix for the slider question.
