Yes, I likewise have this problem. Would it be possible to treat this as 
follows:

- On directory opening, don't check if thumbnails need updating.

- On a refresh check if they need to be updated.

Check if they need to be updated with a hashing algorithm, so you can tell 
if it is the same picture or not. I know some of the less-perfect hashing 
algorithms can work extremely fast. Of course, that's just more overhead 
slowing down the system, and it would slow it down during the first 
thumbnail load as well as all refresh actions, so I am uncertain about it.
