we support 800x600 screens, which leaves us less than 800x600 for windows, and 
the decision was to settle on 640x480 usable space for windows. 

this is different than us supporting 640x480 screens, which as you note, means 
even _less_ space =)

actually, yes it is. YOU may access it, but it is, overall, rarely accessed. 
most importantly, it tweaks the size of one type of button on one type of 
interface element. where else in KDE (or any other GUI) is there such a 
similar "ok, make this one button N pixels big" setting? it's ludicrous. 

fortunately, we're reasonable people in KDE and realize that there is a demand 
for it in this one particular case with some decent reasons for it. so 
instead of simply removing it all together as some other projects would, we 
move it somewhere out of the way.

yes, it's compromise. but one that works best for the majority. kicker's kcm 
is already too busy =)
