it takes ~30s to explain: point to the pager, noting the different desktops, 
and while clicking and openning windows on each (then switching between them) 
say, "Each of these is a separate desktop space. You can put windows on any 
of them and then switch between them easily."

once that explanation was complete, nobody had any problems with or questions 
about how multiple desktops work: it seems to be fairly obvious once 
explained.

most advanced users and neophytes liked it. advanced users because it's a 
power-feature (and they can keep it straight in their heads ;) and neophytes 
mostly because it allows them to keep a different program maximized on each 
desktop and therefore not have to manage stacks of windows.

intermediate users were the ones most resistant to multiple desktops and the 
least likely to use them. chalk it up to comfort levels and learned 
behaviours. they know how to manage stacks of windows, and aren't really 
interested in learning new ways of doing things that interrupt patterns built 
up over the years.
