Here are some suggestions for improvement I've come up with working with
desktop backgrounds in KDE. I hope they are inspiring.

* Why doesn't Konqui have a "Set as Wallpaper" option for images like
Netscape/IE does on other operating systems? DnD does work, but most users
probably don't know about it.

* Why not have a directory for user backgrounds like, say
~/.kde/share/wallpapers, which parallels the system $KDEDIR/share/wallpapers
and could read automatically into the "Background" kcm?

* What's with the dual-naming scheme? Is it a "background" or a "wallpaper?"
While the kcm uses the term "background," the directory is called
"wallpapers." Background is the less technical term, and since KDE now seems
to favor less technical terms (folder vs directory), should this folder be
renamed?

* On the topic of the kcm itself. The "blending" feature is IMHO useless. It
is very difficult to predict what blending a particular color with your
background will result in using Intensity, Saturation, Hue Shift, etc unless
you are an imaging expert. If you really need to do that stuff you can use
GIMP. Why not in place of 'blending' have some sliders that that user
actually understands and can meaningfully adjust: like brightness,
saturation, hue?

* kde-look.org is nice. But wouldn't it be good to have some mechanism to
automatically install backgrounds / themes / etc, instead of having to
download, untar, open a shell, run a script, etc?

* Now that wallpapers are available in rss feeds, would it be useful /
feasible to develop a tray application similar to the "Webshots Desktop"
which can automatically fetch new wallpapers for the user?

Regards,

Luke Sandell
