I think for such a common action as opening tabs,
having a multiple-key combo is a pain.

IMHO, Ctrl+Tab for switching between desktops is a big
pain, since you move across one desktop at a time and
this slows down when you have 4 desktops. The current
behaviour of using Ctrl plus any of the arrow keys in
Xfce and Gnome is easier.
