I think the only reason it's there at all is because IE has a Go button and
somebody wanted to copy it. As such, it shouldn't be removed. However I
would love to see it disappear as it's the first thing I remove from my
configuration, regardless of which browser I happen to be using. This button
is horrible. If you're typing an address anyways, why would you ever want to
reach for the mouse instead of simply pressing the enter button? Maybe if
you pasted in the link, but most people I know still reach for the enter
button instinctively because they are used to typing addresses manually all
day. While I'm ranting about this button, I'll also say that the icon is
horrible. When I fire up IE, I know what that button does. When I fire up
konqueror, I sit there and stare at it for a minute with a question mark
floating above my head, eventually moving the mouse over it and waiting for a
tooltip to appear. If I've not used IE before, the tooltip 'Go' is nearly
useless. Go where? Will this bring up a URL dialog? Maybe it will take me
to the Konqueror home page? The only Enter button I've seen that looks like
that (upside down L shape) is on a keyboard from the late 1970s. In the 80s
the mirrored L shape was all I really saw, and in the 90s the smaller enter
key sized about the same as Caps Lock grew in popularity. If I squint very
hard, I can see a very small arrow on the key. Looks kinda like the symbol
on my enter key, but I may not even realize that if I notice this small
detail. In fact until this E-mail it never occured to me that that was a
representation of an Enter function even though I've seen it hundreds of
times. I just saw it as some weird ugly icon, guessed it's meaning based on
familiarity with IE and the icon's placement and tooltip. Without prior
Windows experience, I would be at a complete loss.
So yes, I strongly advocate it's removal from the default toolbar, and
somebody making a better icon and tooltip besides.
