is there a standard HTML interface across web sites? do people never use 
windows, menus, buttons, etc?

no, web interfaces are completely different from one site to the next and even 
web browsers use windows, menus, buttons, etc...

i think what you are saying is that the current crampt layout of things with 
that big tree in a tab widget and 70+ panels is not a great interface, and 
you're right. but using HTML is not the only, nor the best way, to get away 
from that. it is easy for you to say "hey, let's make a bunch of html and let 
the khtml part render it" but it is something completely different for me to 
say, "i'm going to write some code to generate HTML on the fly that works 
with the user's look 'n feel settings and allows for the fexibility in the 
kde config system and provides the functionality hooks we need"

it'd be easier and more functional if the same type of interface was simply 
coded using standard input widgets. not to mention probably faster and 
lighter on resources.
