while we've had several interesting options offered and some useful discussion 
around them, i don't know if we've had enough time to really settle on some 
good options. this is low-hanging fruit, indeed: which is why we probably 
want to treat it carefully =)

these are also the sorts of changes that i'd personally be more comfortable 
implementing near the begining of a devel cycle. that way we can get feedback 
on it and have time to experiment. by making changes near the end of a devel 
cycle we simply get to throw out our "best guess".. of course, our best guess 
may be right, so... *shrug*

there are also some important kicker enhancements coming up for 3.2, such as 
"kicker layout" files that provide a simplified way to describe a kicker 
layout in a single file that kicker can then use to create a new 
configuration from.

these enhancements alone may make it worthwhile to hold off on exploring what 
we can do with kicker's default(s?) till then...
