/me just tried the "new" button on the KSpread toolbar, and yes. It really 
does seem a bit odd to be presented with a dialog asking you if you want to 
open a document after clicking the "new" button.

At application start, however, it's a good idea to keep the dialog. And with 
KWord, the dialog should present the templates upon choosing "new", but not 
the option to open an existing document. That's what the "open" button/menu 
item is for.
