Hi Eva,
Thanks for the replies.
I do know that kde 2.2 binaries will be uploaded soon.
(In fact I check your site at least twice a day for them :-)
I just thought that trying to compile kde 2.2 (whether successfully or not) 
may be a learning experience for a newbie like me.
I am trying out your suggestion in the meantime
