I would also suggest to try Scribus next.
From what I know, it is not fully up to par, but getting closer each day.

I would not try KWord, because so far I've understood that KWord is
a text processing application and not a desktop publishing one.

(At Intevation we were trying Scribus and did a lot in www.Skencil.org, LaTeX
in the past, but we usually do not do DTP.)
