Possible KDE track:
***KDE 4 - Desktop of the Year (an overview)
Perhaps a couple of overview presentations over the 2 days of the
Fest. Critically important to cover Wobbly Windows and various alt-tab
goodies. Oh, and desktop switching eye candy. Critical!!! Because
that's what KDE 4 is all about. ;/

In addition, there will be a lab running throughout the Fest where
people can try (desktop and web) applications. Some of the machines
will be running Ubuntu 8.10; the others will be loaded with the latest
stable version of OpenSUSE (11.1) w/KDE 4. There will be volunteer
tutors. Possibility: KDE team members visit the lab from time to time
to answer questions and make brief presentations on cool KDE stuff.
(The lab room has an overhead projector set up).

***KDE 4 - Under the Hood
Technical goodies. Explanation/demonstration of Solid, Phonon,
Akonadi, semantics, etc. At the BLUG presentation I did in March 2008,
the technical audience really sat up when the discussion turned to the
"so what" of these concepts. It turned from "that's nice...for eye
candy" to "imagine...what if...how would you use that?" I was out of
my league but the tech heavyweights really got into it.

***KDE 4 - Roll your Own
   1. Using the technical goodies - various APIs, libraries, frameworks
   2. Plasma - writing applets; maybe a hands-on project for the Fest.
The logo for the Fest is TotemTux which is available as svg. It would
be cool to see something Plasmoidish/Oxygenish done with that.
   3. Join the team - recruit people to the KDE dev team. Get into
details with the information covered on techbase.kde.org/Contribute.

***Go to the exhibit table for more information.

It seems to me that 6 people in the "booth" is too many. Most of the
organizations attending have 1-3 people and that seems adequate.
However, there are great opportunities to attend presentations, chat
with people or give presentations.

Someone needs to register at linuxfestnorthwest.org. There are left
hand links for presenters and exhibitors. If you decide to do a track,
just register once and let me know. I'll work with the people who do
scheduling.

The Bellingham Airport (BLI) has limited service. Allegiant Air flies
to a few places and is reasonably priced (although they will charge
you an extra $5 if you want to breathe during the flight; they charge
for all extras, but don't limit what you can bring onboard). Horizon
Air connects in Seattle, which is about 100 miles from Bellingham,
along I-5. No two places in Bellingham are more than 20 minutes from
each other by car.

The drive from Seattle isn't bad, except on the Seattle end during
rush hour(s). Once you hit the Seattle outskirts, it's smooth sailing
until you hit Bellingham. Once a week or so, there's a rush 5 minutes
somewhere in Bellingham (It kinda rotates locations).

If there's a KDE track, there will be a dedicated location for the
duration, organized as you wish. The presentations are scheduled so as
to allow passage time, and to accommodate people who want to plan
their own activities.

Ubuntu is registered for the Fest; they will have CDs of Kubuntu or
will burn on demand. The Fest can figure out how to provide OpenSUSE
11.1 CDs.

Our preferred hotel is the Hampton Inn. They have a free shuttle
to&from the Airport, which is about ten minutes away from the Hotel.
They _may_ be willing to shuttle people from the Hotel to Bellingham
Technical College (known as "BTC" to locals) if their airport traffic
permits. At any rate, BTC is less than 2 miles from the Hampton.

If you are feeling swanky and don't mind the occasional train noise,
the Chrysalis is also available. Last year, the people who stayed
there loved it. It's about 5 miles away from BTC.

Please let me know if anyone wants additional information

It's exciting that y'all are considering coming to Bellingham and
LinuxFest Northwest. I think that you will be quite satisfied all the
way around.

Carl
