hi...

i've been ruminating over the rather consistent recurrences of commonly held
misconceptions regarding KDE ... there are many of them and the memes refuse
to die ... this seems to be due to a combination of factors, such as:

o when something bad happens, lots of fuss is made about it. when something
gets fixed, virtually nothing is said.
o real, hard facts are often hidden in mailing lists, long interviews,
technical articles, etc ... so most people (read: users and journalists) miss
them

personally, i'm fairly tired of reading them over and over again and this has
led me to think about possible solutoins. one concept i've managed to come up
with is a series of FAQ-like documents for various components of KDE that
succinctly verify or refute commonly held opinions / assertions about KDE.
the language would be brief and non-technical in nature. a very simple format
something like this could be used:

 Table of contents

 Common opinion ...
 Answer ...
 References: ...

 Common opinion ...
 Answer ...
 References: ...

the issues addressed could be grouped into categories such as
"Misconceptions", "Historical Limitations" and "Current Limitations and
Design Decisions" .... topics might include such things as "Licensing", "The
KDE Development Process", "KDE Infrastructure", "Konqueror", "KOffice", "The
KDE Component Model", etc ....

releasing such a document every week or three for a different component /
aspect of KDE might go a long ways to combating the storm of
misunderstandings around KDE that seem to exist out there. they would need to
archived somewhere easy to get at and announced in appropriate venues.
updates would need to occur over time as well ...

do you think this would be a worthwhile use of time? would you support such an
effort? what other ways could misinformation be addressed?
