If I say "HTML message" then I mean an HTML-only message. If the message 
is multipart/alternative with HTML and plaintext version of the text 
then KMail of course takes the plaintext version for the reply assuming 
that this is a decent plaintext version of the message. Taking the HTML 
part would lead to much worse results (unless the plaintext version 
included in the mp/alt message is already extremely broken, but that's 
hardly KMail's fault).

That's correct and above I explained why we do this.
