The serial number is unique for all messages KMail knows about. If you 
copy a message the copy will get a new serial number. If you apply a 
filter on a message the message might get a new serial number. There 
might be other situations in which the serial number changes. During 
folder compaction or when a message is moved the serial number 
shouldn't change.
