Look up Englebart (Englebert?). His early
work at the SRI predates and influences Xerox
and Apple. Part of his vision was integral
hyperdocument navigation and editing, far
closer to the "Xanadu" system (blergh) than
to what we now have.

His recent musings are summed up as an
"Open Hyperdocument System", or OHS. Try
searching for the "Bootstrap Institute" or
similar (my web access is down).

Very rarely are there new ideas. There are
usually just old ideas with new names and a
different haircut.
