None posted. I did a shutdown/reboot, then came up in runlevel 3 without
entering KDE at all. I followed the readme and made sure all dependencies
were met.

Okay. Found that - I'd missed it before. However, Kmedia Player and XMMS
don't work - Kmedia Player starts showing the icon on the task bar, then
quits. XMMS starts but will lock up when you hit the play button. I can
play CDs. I get no error messages. Kbattleship won't start either but
Kabalone will. Is this related to not removing the files from /tmp and
~./kde2?

Okay. Given that I've installed 2.2 can I go back, do as you state, then
reinstall KDE 2.2 (using the -i switch insted of -u)? Since I have a lot of
apps (Kmail, Knode, Konqueror, etc.) that have info in ~/.kde2 what files is
it critical that I get rid of - I assume any dcop files and clean out /tmp -
are there any more. Or will I have have to rename the current ~/.kde2 and
then copy my app files back into it ?

Done. I checked the requirements on the KDE site before I downloaded and the
RPM included a qt2-2.3.1-2 which I installed. It's in /usr/lib/qt2.
