The person that said (correctly, I believe) that KMail does only inline GPG 
sigs by default and that the plug-ins are required for MIME sigs was replying 
to me. *He* had the plug-ins set up and so was signing his multi-part mails 
as he claimed.

(For the record, after lots of digging, I got them working too and it works 
here too, as he claimed.)
