Don't know if this will help but below is the "locate ispell" results from my 
SuSE 9 system for you in which Kmail's spell checker works fine. It also 
worked fine for me in SuSE 8.2 but I do not have that installed any longer. 
Perhaps another kind lister who does could help. Anyway, looks like you may 
be missing some files above. Don't know. You might run Yast > Software > 
Install and Remove Software > Filter > Search: "ispell"; and see if you can 
install it again. Just a thought.
