One of the new KDE3 features I've noticed allows you to enable auto login, and 
auto restore session upon an X windows crash... it really wouldn't be hard to 
implement this... and as for the argument of different versions of X... the 
only really big change in config files occured from versions 3.x.x to 
4.x.x... I mean... the user could specify where the config file is, and the 
app (or user) could determine how to generate the changes based on the 
config. It's really not *that* complicated. =)

  Can X be restarted without restarting your KDE session, i.e. keeping
  everything you were doing with KDE at the time there? Thanks,
