I think Dralan was on the right track.

In startx you'll probably have lines like these

# set up default Xauth info for this machine
mcookie=`mcookie`
serverargs="$serverargs -auth $HOME/.Xauthority"
xauth add $display . $mcookie
xauth add `hostname -f`$display . $mcookie

The mcookie stuff is needed by DCOP for authorisation over ICE AFAIK.
If that 'hostname -f' is screwing up (hence your 'hostname: Unknown host' 
error message) then maybe the results of the xauth commands in .Xauthority 
might be messing up DCOP down the line. Just guessing here of course.

Does the command 'hostname -f' indeed return 'hostname: Unknown host'?
What are the contents of /etc/hostname?
