Have a framework that allows it to work with different backends. Initially 
only an Xfree86 backend would exist, but users of other X servers could add 
it.

If it's a distribution thing, every distro is different. If the user 
interface for these changes is standard across the board it's a damsight 
easier.

It would probably require some changes to Xfree86 to do this, but at least 
you could set what the settings will be on the next startup. Thanks,
