<?php
  $title ='KDEPrint';
  $location="/ KDEPrint";
  include("templates/templ-begin.html");
  include("./functions.php");
?>

 <p><b>KDEPrint</b> is an integral part of <a href="http://www.kde.org">KDE</a>, the \
K Desktop Environment, where it acts as general printing manager.</p>
  <h1>Information</h1>

 <p> This site is <b>KDEPrint's</b> home on the web. <b>KDEPrint</b> has been part of \
KDE since version 2.2. It is not a standalone program -- it is the new printing \
framework for KDE 2.2 and KDE 3, which is automatically used by all up-to-date KDE \
programs.</p>
 <p>This site is aimed at helping everybody to understand how <b>KDEPrint</b> works. \
For example, this includes both home Linux users as well as experienced UNIX \
administrators. KDE developers might find it useful to make this site a regular stop \
to look for new information.</p>
 <p>As KDEPrint and this website evolve, we will increase the amount of support for \
other printing systems here. One of the systems we still don't provide the amount of \
support we'd like to, is LPRng. Of course you can <i>print</i> with LPRng, but the \
extended features of this system are not yet available through KDEPrint. Any help to \
achieve this is most welcome.</p>
 <p><a href="http://www.cups.org">CUPS</a> (Common UNIX Printing System) users will \
regard support for their printing system by KDEPrint as very feature-rich and \
near-complete. Some people may even see this as a final reason to make the switch to \
CUPS. Others will stick to their proven and working system and wait for a better \
support inside KDEPrint. (Some systems don't provide much print features, so there is \
not much to support for KDEPrint.) </p>
<p>In the meantime, even if your printing subsystem is not yet well covered, you are \
encouraged to explore the Printing Manager module in KControl. You will find its \
operation to hopefully be fairly self evident, no matter what printing subsystem you \
use. </p>
 <p>
 KDEPrint is constantly evolving. The next version in KDE 3 will include a lot of \
nice new features. If you want to have a sneak at what's in the labs: try a glimpse \
at the <a href="/screenshots/">screenshots</a> and the <a \
href="/development/">development</a> sections. It might well wet your appetite for \
the upcoming release...</p>
<h2>Contribute!</h2>

<p>This site will also live from your contributions. The initiators are preparing a \
series of documents to start with. But then it is also up to you. If you are happy \
with KDEPrint as it is, fair enough. If you want to ask for feature requests, let us \
know: you might have a chance to get it done. If you want to learn new tricks for \
usage in your printing, have a look at our "Tips" sections. (It will grow over the \
time.) If you encounter problems with printing, come by and look if there is help \
available. We might even set up a mailing list or newsgroup if there is demand for \
it. KDEPrint users could then help each other. </p>
<p>You might also want to contribute as a KDEPrint developer. There's a lot of things \
to do, improve, or whatever. Even for graphic designers or documentation writers -- \
and especially for translators. We can imagine to have not only the documents \
translated, that will appear here, but even the whole website. It depends on your \
help. </p>
<p>You may also want to develop support for other print systems. One of the most \
wanted people inside our ranks at this moment is a LPR plugin developer. If you know \
one or various different flavours of this classical network printing system (LPRng, \
GNUlpr, SystemV-LP (HP-UX, Solaris), plain LPD), we need your help. If you are \
interested, don't hesitate! </p>
 <h2>Downloads</h2>

 <p>Whereas you won't see a software download section around here, there will be \
downloadable versions of the KDEPrint Handbook and other interesting stuff in \
different formats, mainly HTML and PDF. This is useful to everybody who wants to \
learn more about KDEPrint, but doesn't have a current KDE-powered machine around. \
Also, because KDEPrint is evolving so rapidly, the Handbook might not always be in \
sync with the software at release time, or with the version on your computer. Looking \
for a translation of KDEPrint documentation? Yes, this will be a place to find it, if \
it is done.</p>
 <h2>Printing News</h2>
