I think you're assuming too much in git would be able to cope with automatic 
reformatting without giving you a conflict

Can't think of anything (because it's been a long time since i last translated 
something :-/), but i'm pretty sure Chusslove tooling could be helpful for 
something like this since it understands the .po format.
