If you use -o you do not need a redirection:
msgfmt -c file -o /dev/null

Also be aware that not all KDE3 files can be checked that way. We only 
guarantee to be able to use --check-header not --check (which is -c )

In KDE4, well it does not look better that we could use --check with 
plurals. :-(
