Seriously 
I'm one of the people mentioned as not being a "normal" developer 
I'm  > 40 chronologically but act 12-14 sometimes (just ask my wife) )
and am trying to help I probably trashed my first computer before some of 
these people were born ) no offense meant people and my "training" is very 
dated....  I taught myself C on an old CoCo with a pre-linux version of Unix 
called OS9 (no not the Apple one.... this was 1986-7?)  with out all the 
goodies we take for granted today .... math libraries, graphics.... you get 
the picture.  I was fairly good with coding out a quick and dirty function 
that did the job but was w/o all the "fluff" (like purty pictures). And I was 
looking at the source for KDevelop as I liked it and saw a few things I 
wanted to add so I found out that parts of  KWrite were being used so I 
started hacking on KWrite.  

My advice to you is find something that interests you and hang out here
and keep us chauvinistic males in line )
