Seems like Xserver or Xfontserver (xfs) configuration problem. Using fonts
from (either local or remote) xfs is recommended so I presume that you're
using xfs. You have to install both bitmapped fonts for your resolution
(100dpi for 21" monitors and presumably 19" as well, 75 for the rest) and
Type1 fonts at least. In case you're using xfs (ps aux | grep -xfs), see
/etx/X11/fs/config file. This is how I've set up the catalogue line on Redhat
7.0.

catalogue = /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled,
        /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi:unscaled,
        /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1,
        /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo,
        /usr/share/fonts/default/Type1,
        /usr/share/fonts/ISO8859-2/misc:unscaled,
        /usr/share/fonts/ISO8859-2/100dpi:unscaled,
        /usr/share/fonts/ISO8859-2/Type1

I've made all bitmap fonts (100dpi and misc) to be used in unscaled mode
only. Make sure that Type1 is set up correctly (fonts.dir file, etc.)

Your problems MIGHT be distribution related as well. Which distrib are you
using?
