Does shutting the machine down, waiting an hour and then powering it up help?
If so then the CPU overheating. I had this problem first 2 years ago with
Windows95 and AMD K5/90. Some CPU's, notably AMD's, have serious problems
with floating point ops when they are too hot. In win95 it showed up as
dropped characters and font substitutions (didn't use linux yet). In the long
run (after 45 minutes of use) all truetype fonts were dead and bitmapped ones
were substituted. I presume that xfs type1 renderer will gracefully foldback
to substituting bitmapped fonts when there are math errors, although this is
just a pure guesswork (no time to look into xfs sources). Well, my cpu was
really hot as the fan was dead. ;-)
