Well, XFree86 has the XF86VidMode extension for which a man page should be
available (for 3.3.x as well as 4.x). This extension offers selection of
video modes and even on the fly creation of new mode lines. It has also
functions for specification of monitor properties and on XFree 4.0 for gamma
setting. But it seems that the virtual resolution cannot be changed. So one
cannot switch to mode lines with a higher physical screen resolution than the
current virtual res.
I had the idea of writing a kcontrol module to select video modes and add
mode lines and for gamma correction setting. With a "run as root" option,
this could be added permanently to the XF86Config. A tray icon in kicker for
fast mode selection might also be good.
I wrote a small kcontrol module that offers video mode selection and a simple
gamma correction. I wrote this for testing and learning. It belongs to my
first kde code, so it might be Ugly Code (TM), but if someone's interested, I
could provide it.
