You're perfectly right. The mechanism is the same. The API is different. I
find KDE's to be the easiest. I didn't find docking so useful. But seemed
lots of us chosen to use it. I don't think kapplets which don't act as
normal X apps are useful too. Swallowing is excellent solution. Only the
API should be eventually extended so that things Matthias attempts with
kapplets be possible with any swallowable app (change layout at panel
orientation change, build contextual RMB menus inside kpanel's normal
menus etc) - all these can 1) be communicated to the panel with entries in
the .desktop file; 2) be optional - so that alternative swallowing apps
still be able to swallow the applets even if they don't support kpanel
mechanisms etc.

OK, I think I'm a little incoherent. Better I'd go back to my work.
