Well, RFC's are more or less "conventions" :-) 
The last 'real' RFC on usenet is quite old now, and it's 
safe to assume that son-of-rfc1036 is what most people
consider a standard. IIRC, the last RFC doesn't even
talk about the use of MIME. It's nevertheless used by
everyone because of the similitary of a usenet posting
to a normal mail.
