This a Gentoo box and the network set-up is done via init scripts. I would 
expect the information to be obtained from ifconfig, route, etc. Looking at 
Hal output I see nothing about Core2Duo, which is the processor type, so maybe 
it is a Hal problem. 

I just installed wicd and also got a lot of wifi stuff I don't need, and it 
just caused trouble. I guess this is a "never mind" situation! :)
