Most of the suggestions are right (raster graphics, removing desktop effects). 
You may also try ensuring that you aren't using KDE3 apps under KDE4, which is 
really a bad idea, anyway.

This shouldn't be a problem. Why can't KDE4 be made to be as fast as KDE3? Any 
technical reasons?
