If you are using grub as your boot loader, edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and
search the line which refers to your current kernel. Add "i915.modeset=1" at
the end. This is the line in my menu.lst (using a 2.6.30 kernel, which BTW
has improved *a lot* the intel's driver performance):

kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.30-1-686 root=/dev/sda5 ro i915.modeset=1

You can test if KMS works on your system without making permanent changes.
At boot prompt, edit the boot options by pressing 'e' twice (from memory,
not sure), move to the kernel line and change it as before. If KMS works
well, make the change in the menu.lst file.

Hope this helps.
