Be kind to Arnold. He probably does not meet many end-users in his
line of work. He clearly broke three cardinal rules of talking to end-users.

  - Never make an end-user feel stupid.
  - Never pass the buck (if someone else is really responsible, offer to
assist the end-user in getting some action from them).
  - Never say "Well XYZ is easy for me ..." - one day you might be talking
to a brain surgeon or a climate scientist ...

Nevertheless I do feel stupid. I have been racking my brains to think how
I managed to miss that Search tab in Control Center. Obviously I was
feeling increasingly frustrated as time went on - and that tends to impede
both thought and observation. But actually I've never spotted it before,
either - but then I do not use Control Center very often.

I think the whole side bar would be much better if it was like those on many
web pages: http://techbase.kde.org/Main_Page is a good example. i.e. a
search box and then the list of contents of Control Center. If the search
is restricted to certain keywords, just drop the list down if/when the search
box gets the focus.

Re tabs, if you have a tall narrow object, you expect them to be at the side
(see KDevelop (?)) - or on a landscape object, you expect them at the top
(see Firefox or KDevelop's editing pane). Also the Search tab is greyed
out in Control Center. Maybe it looks disabled and so gets overlooked ...

MS Access database, much as I curse and fume over it in another
existence, has a neat way to emphasise tabs. All the tabs are equally
bright and clear, but the text of the selected tab is moved up the screen
a few pixels and then made bold.

Anyway, sorry, should have seen the Search option. Cheers, Ian W.
