The filtering in Konqi works for me for simple cases of this, but for more
complex groupings, nothing beats dragging the files I want to an empty part
of the window, and then after I have them all close, a quick drag-select and
I'm in business.

Bottom line is I don't think simple tagging/filtering is going to be enough
by themselves, mostly because it will be too slow ( I don't see how you can
make text-tagging faster than click-drag?).

Now we're cooking with gas! Call it a stack, bin, basket, cart, whatever.
This is an improvement I would love too see.
