Those terms have been coined a long time ago, and yes, they are from a Western
perspective. Similar terms exist in french (and german, too):

http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extrême-Orient
If these names of the main categories are not common in a certain locale
(maybe it's like that for your example Japan) I guess the
respective translator team will do something about it. :)
I don't think this is a case of needed political correctness or some such
as it's not really a touchy issue (which it was with "Macedonia").
