I was wondering exactly the same thing. I think that Kate/KWrite uses spaces 
for indentation and that's the problem. If you go to configure editor, you 
will notice that there's an option which says "Use spaces instead of tabs for 
indentation and you can specify the number of spaces the indentation will 
have). 
I'm not really sure, but I suspect it's something with that.

Hope someone can give us better feedback on this.
