dear kevin,

thank you for responding about the KDirNotify: i found that, and
investigated it.

i have (as you might have noticed from other messages) made a decision
to use:

- a modified version of hal
- a modified version of KVM
- a modified version of autofs(4) with NEGATIVE_TIMEOUT set to 5 seconds
- the fusexmp "fuse example" as a stateless filesystem proxy redirectory

!!!

this gets round the problems of the 2.6 kernel not yet doing unmounts
properly on usb devices.

it also means that users don't have to worry about "unmount", it just...
HAPPENS! wheeee!

the only thing left i have to deal with is that damn kioslave with a
kio_file is keeping hold of the /dev/hdc.

i see comments in .xession_errors of:

	Checking /dev/hdc for cdrom...
Testing /dev/hdc for cooked ioctl() interface

it doesn't let go.

how do i force it to let go? grrrr!

the same well: Love. If you love yourself and everyone and everything
around you, funnily and coincidentally enough, life gets a lot better.
