I think that KDE should have some generic representation of File System Units,
versatil enough to let carefull configurations, abstract the hard disk
totally, like for example, MacOS does.
This abstraction should be coherent everywhere in KDE.
I'm posting this so you can give me your thoughts so I can start building an
spec (a document) about it.
I think that fsu (file system units) should be available in the desktop, in
konqueror and in the open/save dialog.
I think should be real or virtual, like there will be a 'Root' unit and 'My
Files' which would be the home directory as well as CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD-ROM,
DVD-RW, Camera, remote disks, etc, etc.
I think there will be static and dynamic units. The dynamic units, are not
always present while the static ones are always present.
The hard disk is static, a camera or a cd is dynamic, I don't know about
remote mount points, shared files and that kind of stuffs. Some units may
require to be mounted, some nots... I think the actual implementation doesn't
really matter as long as it's coherent across apps, dialogs, etc.
One of the big problems I find when I see people using KDE, is accessing
files. So, there's a camera icon on the desktop to choose the camera, mount
it and unmount it... but when I go to the open file dialog, there's no camera
there...
So, what are your thoughts about it ?
Thank you.
